Sunday: Visit to a Sculpture Gallery

My lovely new friend Gisele is a sculptress (is that a term??) and also does bronze art. She invited me to come with her into Wellington to see where she works with other artists, sculpting.

 Inside the art gallery is a bronze sculpting work space.
Bronze Sculpture, I learned, is an over
a thousand year old art and uses a process
called LOST WAX BRONZE CASTING

A mould is taken of the original piece. We use the highest quality polyester resins, silicone, fibre-glass resin and plaster jackets. We can ensure nil shrinkage at the mould-making stage to ensure less distortion of the final bronze castings.A wax model is pulled from the mould. Each model is then methodically worked on to ensure exact replication of the original artwork/design.
We then “spru” the wax model into castable bronze trees which allow molten bronze to flow smoothly through “gates” which are carefully constructed. The ‘gated’ wax model is ready to be dipped in six to ten coats of special refractory material. Each piece is carefully time-dried and handled. This process coats the wax model, encasing it in a hard ceramic ‘shell’ which can withstand heat upwards of 1200 degrees Celsius. [Source: Internet]
