Week 2.. Diploma Resource 1: Painting

Thematic Painting #1
Tutor Liz Robinson

Session One: Work from a theme, explore  chosen subject matter and develop your own technique in the process. Draw up a mind map in your visual diary and do some research into the subject. Also look into what other artists have done, their style of application and techniques they have used.

Exercise 1: Set up a still life of objects around you and paint it from light to dark.
Exercise 2: Repeat the exercise using the same still life but this time working from dark to light.

so I set up my still life using fruit. Three pieces.
A red apple, a green apple and a mango.
I had a bit of a problem with the exercise as
I struggled with understanding HOW to do it.
My first attempt ended up in the bin!
I printed it out in gray-scale and ditched painting the "plate"
This is what I ended up with...
I'm happy enough with it. Love the mango and green apple
not so much the red. I't the heavy shading but that's ok given
I wasn't even sure WHERE to start with painting!

So now I need to try the exercises AGAIN
this time FOCUSING on using the method requested.
Light to Dark. Dark to light. Loosen Up.

More tone and form...

I used charcoal for this one
and while I was in the Materials Shop at TLC I brought some of these
 ....so many pretty colours!
At the start of the Certificate Course
you get sent a small box of pastels but it
only has a limited ranged of colours
I wanted more blues, greens and purples...
Using a mix of greens for this one
...green, teal and lime for this
..and my favourite for the afternoon...
Love how this one turned out!

Time: 3 hours (19 March)
Resource 5, tone and form, pastels/charcoal

Tonal Drawing - torso

Yesterday I spent a few hours editing some of the photos I took while in Wellington...I am particularly interested in playing with the tonal aspects of the bronze torso so I printed it out in grey-scale, negative, green and blue hues and saturated to give me some ideas to work with...
 original
 grey scale
 negative
 blue
 green
over-exposed

I did a pencil sketch
then printed out several copies to work with
blocked in the light, dark and mid tones
and blended with my finger, then used an eraser to lift tone where the light fell. I think it looks better IRL and upside down LOL but that's just me..hehe Going to work on some more..add some colour etc

I also played around with some other photos...altering the effects and I'm very interested to have a play with pastels to bring in some colour with these...

Time: 3 hours (18 March)

Resource #1: Tonal Exercises

I had a play with charcoal first then changed to pencil
(2B, 4B) for the following tonal exercises
My favourite one by far is the last one...I've decided I'm not
fond of straight lines. I much prefer curves :o)

I have two to complete...

Time: 3 and 1/2 hours (11th August, 2012)
